Chioma Ajala

Daily writing prompt
You’re going on a cross-country trip. Airplane, train, bus, car, or bike?

In Nigeria, where I am from, Ajala is a Yoruba word used to describe somebody who travels a lot. Or who moves a lot. I’m not sure what the word actually means, but I do know that there is a story about a man, the original Ajala, who traveled from country to country (or around the world as some would say) on his motorbike.

I love traveling! It is my one true love in terms of activities, and I get excited at the prospect of going on a trip. When I was much younger, I didn’t used to get tired at all from sitting in a bus all day going from one end of the country to another. It was always my pleasure to move, no matte how impromptu. These days, my big age (the ripe old age of 30) seems to be telling on me, and I find myself needing to sleep more after a trip. How sad.

For this reason, and this alone, my answer to this prompt would be airplane. I like that it is relatively faster that any of the other choices and I can sleep on the plane much more comfortably than any other vehicle. Because if there is one thing that Chioma will do on a cross-country trip, it is sleep. I was raised to believe that riding shotgun and sleeping on a trip while another person was bad traveling etiquette, because they needed to stay away. So you had to stay awake with them. Well, why don’t we avoid all that and just fly together?

I have traveled cross-country by train, bus and car before. I didn’t mind. In fact, after the airplane, a personal car would be my next bet just for the freedom it affords you. The idea of being able to stop and sight see at different points is very appealing. You can go at your own pace and just enjoy your trip. Public transport is all rush-rush and all that hustle can take the joy out of a trip.

You see that bike? Yeah, won’t be catching me on that ever. I’m too old for all that air please. How do I want to sleep on a bike? Abeg count me out.

Okay, bye!

Chioma.
